2014 Nelson Series: Kristala Prather

Kristala Prather, associate professor of chemical engineering at MIT, gives a talk entitled “Teaching Old Bacteria New Tricks: Engineering Microbial Chemical Factories” as part of Harvey Mudd’s Nelson Speaker Series, Nov. 4, 2014.
Prather discusses how microorganisms naturally possess a wide array of chemical compounds, synthesized and transformed by the action of their constituent enzymes. She describes efforts to expand this suite of chemicals by designing and introducing new pathways into microbial hosts, as well as efforts to control these pathways in novel ways.
